Removing
Cryptosporidium With Water Filters
For Your Family's Health
Filtering what comes from your tap:
Many, but not all, available home filtration systems remove Cryptosporidium.
Some designs are more suitable for removal of Cryptosporidium
than others. Those that have the words "reverse osmosis" on
the label protect against Cryptosporidium. Many other types that work by micro-straining also work. Look for
one that
will remove particles that are less than or equal to 1 micron in diameter.
There are two types of these - "absolute 1 micron" filters and
"nominal 1 micron". The absolute 1 micron filtration will
more consistently remove Cryptosporidium than nominal filtration.
Some nominal 1 micron filters will allow 20% to 30% of 1 micron particles
to pass through.
Bottled labels reading "well
water," "artesian well water," "spring water," or
"mineral water" do not guarantee that it does not contain
Cryptosporidium. However, protected well or protected sources are less likely to contain
Cryptosporidium than what comes from a bottle or the tap, from less protected sources, such as rivers and lakes.
Juices made from fresh fruit can also be
contaminated with Cryptosporidium. Several people became ill after drinking apple
cider made from apples contaminated with Cryptosporidium. You may wish to avoid
unpasteurized juices or fresh juices if you do not know how they were
prepared.

“Point of Entry” (POE) Whole House

First, we recommend that you install a high-flow Whole House
filter where the line comes into your home. This Whole House filter will reduce rust and
sediment picked up from the pipes that deliver H2O to your home from your well or
municipal water system. This first cleaning will protect your appliances (hot water
heater, clothes washer, dishwasher, humidifier, toilets, showers, etc.) from the wear
caused by rust and sediment. A Whole House filter will also remove much of the chlorine
that can cause itchy skin and damage your clothing.
“Point of Use” (POU)
Then we recommend you install a high-contaminant-removal
water filters in your kitchen (or bathroom) used for cooking and drinking. Called
“Point of Use” purifiers, these units remove contaminants and provide clean,
safe, great tasting h2o on demand. Select from our:
